Our Verdict

Sony focuses on speaker engineering and material used. It uses high quality material like air core inductors, silicon steel plate, etc. If you have tight spaces, then this Sony SS-CS5 speaker will fit. Play them for hours to go through break-in period. They have good transparency and sound bigger than their size. That said, for mid-sized spaces you can include a subwoofer. Details Review

The Sony SS-CS5 has a wooden cabinet. It is designed to get rid of any vibration, resonance or noise that might color the sound. A rigid enclosure with interior joints helps in this case. It has tapered faceplate edges that eliminates any edge diffraction. Use gromets to attach the speaker grille because they are not magnetic.

Sony SS-CS5 is a 3-way 3-driver system. It has 0.75” super tweeter, 1” tweeter and 5.12” woofer. The tweeters can easily play High-resolution Audio files. They are designed to have high sound pressure at a lower weight. Accurate acoustic tuning is done so that the voices of singers are realistic, lively, and energetic. This speaker works with digital files and produces music content as close to the original recording as possible.

The use of super tweeter takes the sound to another level. It helps the speaker to deliver broader soundstage and direct the high ends with accuracy. Bass from 130mm woofer is dynamic, smooth, and tight. They have mica-cellular diaphragm for better bass and clearer voice reproduction. These Mica Reinforced Cellular fiber woofers can retain their position as they move at high speed and deliver accurate bass.

A bass port is available on the back panel of the speaker. It will minimize any port noise and boost the low ends. If you look at the mids, they sound nice, smooth, and warm.

Speaker Placement:

The speakers are not magnetically shielded so a certain amount of distance is needed between the speaker and CRT-based TVs. SS-CS5 from Sony is designed to be used as front or surrounds. In front setup, create equilateral triangle between the user and speaker. Toe-in them and adjust the position.

If you want to place a subwoofer, place it between the speaker and TV. For accuracy, you can also perform subwoofer crawl technique. Place them on stands or tabletops. As long as they are at user ear level, you are good to go.

Connectivity and control:

While connecting the speaker to the amplifier, make sure to match the polarity. Otherwise, the bass will be weak.

Use case:

Sony SS-CS5 speaker is great for music. Once you play the tracks, you will feel the instrument placement right in front of you. For movies, pair a center channel. This speaker is great for everyday use. This is a great speaker for music, TV shows and movies. Use the speaker to listen to rock, pop, classical, etc. For bass heavy songs or if you are a bass head, we suggest a subwoofer via an amplifier.

Compatible device:

Connect one from the list: Sony STR DN590, Denon AVR-S570BT, Marantz PM8006, etc. You can also choose from other popular brands like Onkyo, Yamaha, Cambridge Audio, etc. Pair it with Sony SS-CS3 tower, SS-CS8 center channel, SA-CS9 subwoofer and SS-CSE Dolby Atmos speaker.

The Sony SS-CS5 is an affordable speaker. So, you can easily spend after an amplifier and subwoofer if you want. These are some of the best bookshelf speakers under $150.

Who should choose Sony SS-CS5 speaker?

Sony SS-CS5 speaker is great for small spaces. If you want a rich and full sounding speaker with average bass, then it is best for you. Since it is a passive speaker, you can upgrade and add speakers in future. It is great for users who are starting their journey in the music industry. This will also suit users with a limited budget. The speakers are reliable, durable and have good performance.

How to connect a subwoofer to the Sony SS-CS5 speaker?
