Details Review

KEF R3 passive speaker has a slim and clean look. It has an MDF body and is available in three color options. This cabinet has Constrained Layer Damping bracing. This will get rid of any vibration. The speaker is well built and matches well at our home. It comes with removable microfiber speaker grilles.

KEF R3 Standmount speaker has three drivers: 1” tweeter, 5” mid-bass and 6.5” woofer drivers. In order to achieve enhanced dispersion, the tweeter is placed at the center of the mid-bass driver. It uses Uni-Q driver array that minimizes distortion and optimizes the performance. Mids are clear and precise that makes contents more enjoyable. It has a Shadow Flare that is like a trim ring around the driver. This is known to deliver better clarity.

If you like experimenting, try pushing the trim ring to see the difference. The bass driver is made of aluminum cone that has good rigidity and better damping. This woofer driver design also minimizes resonances and has good magnetic field. As a result, the harmonic distortion is decreased with better dynamics at higher volume levels. Low ends are accurate, even, and clean. It has a powerful soundstage that has good focus.

The low ends are boosted further with a rear bass port. This will eliminate port or chuffing noise resulting in clean, articulate bass. KEF R3 are designed to use as rear or surround speakers as well.

Speaker placement:

Place the speakers 1.5-3m away from each other and 20” from side walls. Keep a gap of 9” from the back wall. Toe-in the speakers for better stereo imaging. Place them on speaker stands or on tabletops. Angle them up to 15-degrees with the user. Perform multiple trial and error to find the suitable spot. If you use them as surrounds, place them on both sides of the user sitting spot. For rear speaker placement, place them behind the user.

Connectivity and control:

Since the KEF R3 is passive, they will need external amplification. Choose a suitable amplifier or AV receiver then connect additional audio sources to it. If you use a subwoofer, you also need to connect it to the amplifier. This speaker supports both bi-wiring and bi-amping so you have the freedom to change the connections to see its impact on sound.

Use case:

The KEF R3 3-way speaker is best for medium sized spaces. It performs well in big rooms too with good clarity and imaging. You can play recordings, content from audio sources like Laptop, CD player, or stream from online.

Compatible devices:

We have created an amplifier/ AV receiver list for your convenience: Denon 3400h, Yamaha RX-V6A, Gamut D3i/D200i pre/power amplifier, Parasound NewClassic 200, Rega Elex-R, etc. Choose from our list or make your own choice.

To create a theater, you can connect the KEF T205 5.1 theater system. It consists of KEF T301 and T101 speakers, T301c center channel and T2 subwoofer. It is not mandatory to choose the same brand, you can have a look at other subwoofers like SVS SB-2000 Pro or SB-3000.

The R3 Standmount speakers are costly. Total cost will increase once you purchase an external amplifier.
