Design
From the box, the AVR-X8500H is intimidating right away. It's hefty, weighty, and not at all minimalist. Rather, with its black or silver finish and recognisable Denon style, it seems robust, even industrial in a manner. If you have never worked with receivers before, the front panel may be quite scary. Knobs, a display, and a lot of buttons abound. For something that seems like it originated from a recording studio, however, once you switch it on, it's really simple to use.
Based on my experience as well as other comments from users, the design isn't always a disadvantage unless you live in little space. In your entertainment centre, this item consumes a lot of actual space. This is not a sleek, tuck-it-away kind of gadget; if you want to match it with a contemporary, understated arrangement, you may have to reconsider your plan. If performance is your only concern, however, the design becomes second nature. It seems like it relates to business. Furthermore, the construction is of first quality. The knobs are strong, the case is robust, and it seems like something you would have ten years if not more.
A drawback of the design is the front's absence of a more contemporary interface or a suitable touchscreen. Many consumers noted that they would anticipate something a bit more highly technologically advanced in the user interface area at this pricing level. that is functional, however, and for some that is all that counts.
Connectivity
The AVR-X8500H has you covered if you like having every conceivable gadget linked up. Inputs and outputs abound in this creature. Given 13.2 channels to work with, you already stand out from most receivers. If you're very deep into immersive sound technologies, it supports everything from 4K passthrough to all the main sound formats like Dolby Atmos, DTS, even Auro-3D.
This receiver has one of the greatest future-proof qualities. It handled everything from my Blu-ray player, game console, and streaming device when I put it up without breaking a sweat. It even promotes IMAX Enhanced, which astounds me. Though I didn't think it would make much of a difference, you come to appreciate the extra depth after seeing a few IMAX films at home.
The Denon AVR-X8500H excels in its capacity to interface many zones. Friends have told me just how much they like this function. Someone else is playing music outdoors on the terrace as they watch a movie in their living room. It maintains everyone in harmony without sacrificing anything.
Said another way, the configuration has a learning curve. Some users have found it daunting to have everything linked properly, particularly if you are not used to handling so many inputs and choices. Though not really a quick-start guide, the handbook helps. For those without any technical knowledge, it is also not the nicest receiver, as one man noted. You might find yourself devoting a good portion of your day to get things going.
Lack of HDMI 2.1 compatibility out of the box is another drawback I have heard from a few others mention. Especially if you like next-generation gaming or want to future-proof your system, a receiver at this price may find it rather annoying that you might have to get a firmware update or wait for a new model for complete HDMI 2.1 capability.
Performance
Here the Denon AVR-X8500H uses its muscles. The first movie I saw was "Dunkirk," and it felt like I was in the theatre once I got everything tuned. The sound was forceful, clear, and well defined. It ate the room, not just filled it. Everything seemed balanced, from the small nuances in conversation to the great rumbles of explosions.
A buddy more into music told me that this receiver revolutionised his record listening technique. He matched it with a decent set of floor-standing speakers; the most striking difference he saw was the way sound separated. The lows are low; the highs are keen but not piercing; the middle are rich. Well, a decent subwoofer lets the lows strike you exactly in the chest. The AVR-X8500H understands how to offer whether your favourite band is on repeat or a blockbuster.
It is not entirely flawless, however. Some people pointed out that you may not fully feel it if you do not have a strong speaker arrangement. A buddy of mine with a basic 5.1 system felt not like much of a step up from his last, less expensive receiver. Therefore, even if the Denon can play like a pro, its performance is only as excellent as the speakers you choose to match it with.
It might run hot as well since it is so strong. A few times during long movie marathons, I saw it get really warm. Though I would advise making sure it's in a well-ventilated location, it didn't shut down or anything.
Where and When to Use
The Denon AVR-X8500H is not a "plug it in and forget it" kind of receiver. This is for those who like to center their living area around their home theatre arrangement. Living in a tiny flat might mean overkill in terms of both space and electricity. This is where it shines, however, assuming you have a decent-sized area—perhaps a separate media room.
Those who entertain will also find it ideal. One customer I spoke with claimed to have frequent movie evenings, and this receiver turned out to be the finest purchase they made. More often than the film itself, people leave discussing the sound. It produces that type of impact.
That said, this isn't the proper match if your only need is for anything to play casual TV viewing or background music. The Denon AVR-X8500H is supposed to be pushed to cover a room with sound that causes one to stop what they are doing and pay attention.
Compatible Devices
Almost nothing this receiver won't find work with. It has the inputs and compatibility you need from game consoles to turntables, from streaming devices. Everything functions well with my setup including an Apple TV, a PlayStation, and an old turntable.
One acquaintance of mine with a more mixed-up arrangement said how amazed they were at the receiver's handling of many devices without lag or signal loss. Even hooking up his PC for some gaming, the audio delay was almost nonexistent.
The only complaint some folks have is the absence of built-in wireless speaker capability. It works with Denon's HEOS system but not as elegantly with other wireless speakers. You may therefore come into some compatibility problems if you have previously made many investments in a lot of Sonos or related systems.
Ease of Use
Not quite a stroll in the park is setting up the AVR-X8500H. If you have never dealt with a high-end receiver before, the sheer array of choices might be taxing. It takes some time to become accustomed to browsing the menus even after the first configuration. Denon might improve on improving user interface friendliness.
Once you get it set up and tuned in, however, it is easy. Denon's app lets you manage the receiver without having to search through menus on the screen; the remote is put up well.
Cost
You cannot avoid it; the Denon AVR-X8500H is costly. For most individuals, this will be a big investment. Many, however, contend that the performance and future-proofing are well worth every dollar. One man I know saved money for a year to acquire it; he never regrets it. Another acquaintance said, that while it's amazing, for anybody without a top-notch home theatre system, it may be overkill.
Ultimately, this is an investment well worth spending if you want to create a great home theatre and appreciate sound quality. However, there are less expensive solutions that will accomplish your goal of bettering the TV sound if all you are seeking.
