Denon AVR-X4700H 9.2-channel home theater receiver Review
If you like home theater and have a medium to big living room, the Denon AVR-X4700H is worth investigating. For individuals who like immersive movie evenings, intense gamers, and music enthusiasts yearning for first-rate sound, it's ideal. Its elegant form complements contemporary configurations and provides a wealth of connection choices. If you live in a limited area, its weight and size might be problematic, however. It's designed generally for those who are eager to commit to quality and want great performance.
Our Verdict
The Denon AVR-X4700H has great sound, strong connections, and a stylish look. Larger spaces and more serious home theater configurations call for it. On the negative side, it's heavy, and setting it up might be challenging. Though it's expensive, the performance makes sense. It's a great pick if you can manage the setup and want a top-notch audio and visual experience. On a limited budget or in a local area, however, you might want to investigate alternatives.

Design
From the appearance standpoint, the AVR-X4700H falls short. Its sleek, contemporary style and black finish fit most home theater configurations very well. Clean front panel with easily readable, large, brilliant display even from a distance. When you have to make rapid changes, the well-placed and simple buttons are fantastic.
Conversely, it is somewhat heavy. Finding a place for this might be a little difficult if you're cramped on space. It's also really weighty; hence, you'll want a strong cabinet or shelf to support it. Once it's set up, however, it seems to be in business. Given the general robust build quality, you can be sure it will endure.
Connectivity
The AVR-X4700H performs especially well in connectivity. With eight HDMI inputs and three outputs, you can connect anything from your Blu-ray player and game console to your streaming devices and your laptop. For future-proofing your system, it also supports the newest HDMI specs—including 8K/60Hz and 4K/120Hz pass-through.
The eARC, or enhanced audio return channel, is among the hippest elements. If you use smart TV applications, this allows you to transfer premium audio from your TV back to the receiver. There are also plenty of legacy inputs for older equipment, so compatibility problems are not a concern.
Wireless-wise, the AVR-X4700H supports Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and even Apple AirPlay 2. Creating wireless connections is easy, and the stability is very remarkable. While not with this one, I have had situations with other receivers where the Wi-Fi connection fails often. It is as strong as a rock.
Still, there are a few negatives. Though there are plenty of HDMI connectors, their spacing is somewhat near. If you have big HDMI cables on many devices, fitting them all might be a challenge. If you're not tech-savvy, however, configuring the more sophisticated features—such as custom input assignments or network settings—can be a little intimidating. Once you receive it, however, the connection choices are excellent.
Performance
Let us now discuss performance, as ultimately that is what counts most. The Denon AVR-X4700H performs everywhere. It supports Dolby Atmos, DTS, and IMAX Enhanced, among other audio formats, therefore providing a very immersive surround sound experience.
The sound has amazing quality. The bass is deep and forceful, the speech is sharp and clear, and the surround effects are very well defined. I built it up, starting with a scene from a well-known blockbuster film that I recognized well. I sensed hearing it for the first time. There was shockingly great detail. The depth and clarity are very remarkable, even at lesser levels.
The musical performance is also really impressive. The AVR-X4700H manages everything, whether you're streaming from Spotify or playing high-quality files from your collection. The instruments in the broad soundstage are neatly separated. It makes you want to listen to all your best music once again to hear the fresh intricacies you may have missed previously.
It isn't flawless, however. Though helpful, the auto-calibration function may sometimes be somewhat erratic. Changing the parameters by hand produced better results, I discovered. Furthermore, you cannot fully use its features if you are utilizing it with less expensive speakers. It truly comes together with top-notch speakers.
Where and When to Use
The Denon AVR-X4700H is flexible enough for many environments. For a devoted home theater, it makes obvious sense. It offers the features and power required to provide a cinematic experience. This receiver can manage everything from movie evenings to dance parties if you have a big living room where you often entertain visitors. For gamers seeking the finest audio experience as well, it's fantastic.
It might be overkill, however, if you live in a dorm or tiny apartment. For medium- to large-sized spaces, the AVR-X4700H's sheer power and size are ideal. In a tiny area, you would not be able to fully use its features; however, there are more reasonably priced, smaller solutions that would be more suitable.
Compatible Devices
Still, another great advantage of the AVR-X4700H is compatibility. It runs with almost anything you could throw at it. It manages anything from the oldest DVD players to the newest game consoles like the PS5 and Xbox Series X. It also fits very many smart home gadgets. It is super handy if you use a smart home system like Alexa, Google Assistant, or Apple HomeKit to use voice commands to operate the receiver.
One thing to keep in mind, however, is that while it works well with most devices, setting things up could take some time. For example, you will need to make sure all of your connections and devices are up to spec if you are linking many devices and want to use advanced capabilities like 8K pass-through or eARC. Though not very significant, it is something to be aware of.
Ease of Use
Using the Denon AVR-X4700H may be a delight as well as a little difficult. The general arrangement is simple, on the one hand. If you're not very tech-savvy, this on-screen setup assistance will really help you go through connecting your speakers and gadgets. Well-designed, the remote control has all the buttons you need precisely labeled.
Things may become a little difficult, however, as you enter more sophisticated settings. The options are large, which is fantastic for personalizing but may be taxing. I can see how someone who isn't as patient may get annoyed after spending a reasonable amount of time adjusting the settings to make everything just perfect. Once you get it set up, however, everyday usage comes easy. Simple and natural are switching between inputs, changing the level, and applying the many sound types.
Cost
The Denon AVR-X4700H isn’t cheap. Given more basic models, this is a large outlay of funds. You do, however, get what you pay for—as they say, features, construction quality, and performance support the price tag. Your home theater or audio system is very important, hence the investment is well worth it.
Having said that, if your budget is limited or if you are just beginning with home entertainment systems, this may not be the ideal option. Though lacking some of the bells and whistles of the AVR-X4700H, there are more reasonably priced models with excellent performance and functionality.
