Details Review

Definitive Technology Demand Series D9 is a mid-sized passive bookshelf speaker. Compared to D7 model, the D9 is bigger and shows better performance. It is made of MDF and has an aluminum front baffle. Looks are great and a bit different due to their drivers. It comes with acoustically transparent removable grille that ensure pure sound production. Use the rubber pads if you place them on any flat surface to ensure stability.

Definitive Technology Demand Series D9 is an all-in-one speaker for compact spaces. The tweeters are designed to deliver accurate stereo image and crystal-clear highs. Along with tweeter and woofer, each speaker has 5 x 9” Passive Bass Radiator to boost the low-ends. Instrumental sounds like piano and guitar sound accurate and clear. Compared to other speakers with similar driver size, this speaker can produce precise mids and better bass.

The speaker crossovers are well built with polypropylene metal-film capacitors and air-core inductors. Linear Response Waveguide in tweeters create a wider sweet spot. You will be impressed by smoother highs and detailed mids from this speaker. The woofer driver is designed to reduce any mechanical stability or cone resonance. To further improve bass and treble, the speaker supports bi-wire and bi-amping.

It is suggested to use bi-amping by using separate amplifiers that have same gain. It is done to ensure voicing balance. Use the speaker stands to elevate the sound and place them securely. Place the speakers leaving a gap from the wall. The D9 speaker can be used as front or rear/surround speaker in a home theater.

Definitive technology D9 supports bi-wire and bi-amping connection with the amp. Other connectivity depends on the chosen amp.

Use case:

Definitive Technology Demand Series D9 can handle both music and movies pretty well. Play music of different genre including hip hop, rock and jazz. If you are willing to build a home theater, pair a center channel speaker and subwoofer. Movies are enjoyable with clearer vocals and low ends make them more engaging. Due to their compact size, they are best for medium sized rooms.

That said, try them in a large room and you might even like their performance. We suggest to create a 3.1 system for larger spaces.

Compatible device:

Connect a matching amp with these speakers and you are good to go. You can use Denon AVR-X4400H, Denon AVRX3400H, Onkyo 9010 or from any other brand.

Connect the D9 with Definitive Technology's floorstanding loudspeakers (D15/D17), bookshelf loudspeakers (D7/D11), a center-channel loudspeaker (D5C) and a powered sub. This will allow you to create a home theater where the D9 will be a part of it.

Ease of use:

This will depend on the amplifier because the D9 is a passive speaker and doesn’t come with any remote or app.

The D9 speakers are affordable but not cheap. You can consider them as mid-priced speakers.

Can I use Definitive Technology Demand Series D9 at any orientation?

Definitive Technology Demand Series D9 is designed to place vertically. Since they have mirrored offset tweeters, it should be placed vertically and not in horizontal state.

Can I use Definitive Technology Demand Series D9 without a sub?

Definitive Technology Demand Series D9 can definitely be used without a subwoofer. However, we suggest this 2.0 setup for small spaces and for users who are satisfied with decent bass. For bass heads, a subwoofer is a must.
