My first pair of speakers were from Infinity. I picked them up in 1992 at a local stereo shop in Orlando, Florida (long since closed). It was a magical time. Prior to that I had always listened to my music on headphones. I was impressed by the fidelity of those speakers, and I’ve continued to be impressed by the brand ever since. The Infinity Primus 363 floor standing loudspeakers brought back the same feeling I had when I bought those first speakers, but with a true 3-way system that provides a bit more bottom end. Plus, retailing for $199.95 each, they’re an incredible bargain. The 363 tower speakers are defined by an extremely low resonance enclosure, made possible by the use of well-placed internal bracing that reduces cabinet vibration and resonances. The high end is provided, in part, by a waveguide tweeter that uses the outer shape of the surround to create a smoother off-axis frequency response. It’s this wider dispersion that delivers a wider soundstage and smoother, more accurate imaging.
The MMD (Metal Matrix Diaphragm) drivers use a two-sided anodized aluminum material core, making it both stiff and lightweight. Dual 6-1/2″ woofers are used for the low frequency reproduction and the technology for these (as well as the mids) are based on the company’s CMMD technology which adds ceramic material into the mix. Speaking of midrange, the Infinity Primus P363 towers have plenty of resolution, with a dedicated 4″ MMD driver performing most of the heavy lifting. This frees up the dual 6.5″ woofers to put forth ample bass, and keeps the system nimble enough to maintain the delicate balance needed to reproduce the near full-range bandwidth of the tower (38Hz – 20kHz).
This is a great tower that I think makes for a good starting point for any two-channel or surround system. This series has been around for a while now, but it’s still one of the best bargains in home theater for those looking to step up their system this holiday season.
